Luck and smartness in business success

Sometimes it is about being in the right place at the right time or having opportunities presented to you that others don't. And smartness- which can mean different things, from academic intelligence to street smarts-is definitely important and the best to apply in business.

But it is not always a single equation of luck + smart = success. What do you think about the role of other factors, like perseverance, hard work, and maybe even a bit of risk-taking? Do you think those are important too? I am curious to hear more about your thoughts.
