Malfunctioning of computers not used for a long time

Sometimes computers which are not used for a long time are malfunctioning. Other than dust accumulation, what is the reason for the computer malfunctioning and how to fix the problem quickly? Is there any way to prevent the computer malfunctioning if the user will not use it for a month or more?

For me l think that the electronics are supposed to be working around the clock. This not only keeps their conditions so good but maintains their hardware too.
