Even having pets would be quite expensive for a middle class earner. Why not have just two kids or even one. That would not be too expensive.

You can't compare have a dog or cat with just one kid. Even few animals is much cheaper and especially less stress. Do you have to animated your dog all time or raise it to be good person? Will you send a dog to school and check what it does with other dogs? No, you can't compare kids with animals.
