Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Thursday authorized the state’s National Guard “to be staged and ready to support local and state law enforcement in protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining public safety,” according to a press release from his office, which stressed that the move was done “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Thousands of people have peacefully made their voices heard. Thank you. We saw powerful peace,” Walz said in the press release. “We have every reason to believe that peace will hold. Yesterday, I directed the National Guard to be ready should they be needed

For me, the decision to keep the National Guard on standby reflects a proactive rather than reactive approach. I think it's important to recognize that, while the demonstrations have been peaceful and powerful, a government's responsibility is to ensure that security and critical infrastructure are protected at all times. Interestingly, these kinds of measures don't necessarily mean there's an immediate risk; rather, they aim to project calm and control should the situation change. Personally, I think the key is balancing trust in the public with institutional preparedness. For me, the most important thing is recognizing the value of peaceful protest while simultaneously ensuring that mechanisms are in place to act if necessary. Ultimately, preparedness is a sign of prudence, not distrust of the community.
