Moving to Paid software

Do you start with a free service than the move to paid service when to comes to built a website? For instance, you can start a forum with SMF or phpBB which are free to use than move to Xenforo, which is a paid software. Do you choose this option or do you directly start with a paid software? Well, one major drawback with this option is if you want to discontinue your service, you will also lose money.

There are some software I started using for free, but after awhile, I decided to move to the paid version so I can have more features.
