There are some businesses that advertise just to get popularity. Those businesses always pump in resources to trend. To what end does a business pump in resources into advertisement just to get popular.

Is the popularity of a business proportionate directly to the sales it would make?

When a business is popular, it means lots of people know about the business, it would automatically generate sales, unless in situations where the business is popular for the wrong reasons.

Popularity is not directly proportional to increased sales, but offering quality products, marketing strategies and fast customer service will trigger increased sales, so brand popularity does not directly support sales, but increases image and brand awareness.
