A 20-day-old baby girl found buried alive in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is struggling for her life, according to hospital officials. She was discovered by chance when a shepherd, who had brought his goats to the area to graze, heard faint screams emanating from beneath a mound of earth. When he got closer, he noticed a small hand protruding out of the muck. After he told the villagers, cops arrived and fished out the infant. Police have not revealed who they suspect is responsible for the crime, but similar instances of abandonment and attempted murder of female children have been blamed on India's predilection for sons, which is widely accepted to be the cause of the country's disproportionate gender ratio.
