There are growing concerns that people in Nigeria may lose access to Facebook and Instagram after parent company Meta faced hefty fines and "unrealistic" regulatory demands from Nigerian authorities,.

Meta has been embroiled in a legal dispute with three Nigerian oversight agencies, which last year imposed fines totaling over $290 million (£218 million) for violating various laws and regulations. Despite attempting to challenge these penalties in the federal high court in Abuja, Meta's efforts were unsuccessful. The court has given the company until the end of June to pay the fines.

In court papers, Meta warned that it might be forced to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria to avoid enforcement measures. While the company owns WhatsApp, it did not mention the messaging service in its statement regarding the situation.

Excuse me a question, as you know now in applications like Facebook and Whatsapp (and not only those) artificial intelligence has been introduced. Isn't it that your country Nigeria is against the diffusion of AI? This could be also because from what I know, artificial intelligence could expose users to various dangers.

I doubt if it will happen because Meta is making millions of dollars from Nigeria. Secondly, the future is prospective and promising, i doubt if Facebook and Instagram will leave Nigeria.

Unfortunately, what you say I have heard has already been done some time ago and therefore I do not exclude that it could happen again. This unfortunately happens because those who have economic power can do what they want, even against the rules. I know that it is a real injustice, but unfortunately for us it is a harsh truth!

Exactly, this is the problem with most of these companies, Nigeria often tends to ignore or let go of things like this.

Yes especially on Instagram and Facebook it would be bad for such Nigerians. They just need to sort things out

But forgive me a question. Aside from the issue of your income based on Meta applications, can I ask you how you could get by without whatsapp?
