The Manila, Philippines report said that PLDT and its wireless subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. (PLDT-Smart) began their pilot test on the use of remote-controlled robotic arms in their cell towers to enable real-time network optimization and coverage improvements, particularly in underserved areas.
The report also stated that PLDT-Smart technology, dubbed the Optical Compass and Robot Arm (OCRA) system that will allow operators to remotely move antennas for real-time adjustments with the goal of boosting coverage in target areas, cutting costs, and enhancing overall network performance.
The report also said that the system addresses long-standing issues in traditional wireless setups, where antennas are fixed in place and adjustments require physical site visits, often costly and time-consuming.
Additionally, this enables remote antenna adjustments, also reduces the need for physical site visits, and helps telcos avoid unnecessary base station installations, saving time and expense. These efficiencies allow Smart to reinvest in expanding and enhancing its network, ultimately benefiting consumers.
This milestone strengthens Smart’s leadership in 5G while laying the groundwork for future 6G advancements, PLDT Management said.
