I have noticed that most of the pocket WiFi comes with only one type of sim card being configured with it. The problem comes when the network is down. What is your take on that?

That is right it uses only one sim card. Mine was almost 5 years but after the strict implementation of card registration, my wi fi sim card suddenly stopped functioning. I brought it to Globe Telecom for card registration. They replace the old with new, the one fully registered but to my dismay, it worked for me for some weeks. After that no network. I'm thankful I have unlimited Internet 24/7.

Yes that's one of the major disadvantage with pocket wifi, but there are some that let's you use two sims such as HOSAYA D22

Yes, it only uses one SIM card. I have not encountered a pocket Wi-Fi that allows the use of two SIM cards yet, or I may not be updated on that. Hehe.
When you buy a pocket wifi from a telecommunications provider, it would only be allowed to take the sim of the telecoms provider.
