Poland has announced the closure of its border with Belarus as Belarus conducts the Zapad (West) military exercise. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the border will be shut from midnight on Thursday in response to the ongoing drills.

Lithuania is also enhancing security measures along its border with Belarus. The Lithuanian border guard service has indicated that it will implement additional precautions during the duration of the military exercise, according to reports from NTB.

The Zapad exercise is a recurring military drill held by Belarus, often in cooperation with Russia, and has previously prompted concerns among neighbouring countries regarding regional security. Both Poland and Lithuania are members of the European Union and NATO, and share borders with Belarus.

The closure of the Polish border and the Lithuanian security measures show the regional concern against the military exercises of Belarus. These actions seek to prevent incidents and protect the stability of neighboring countries. Belarus's collaboration with Russia during Zapad generates special attention among NATO members. Maintaining surveillance and international coordination is key to guaranteeing security in the area.

There is now a widest escalation of war that may soon lead to WW3.
Given how "well" Russia is doing w/Ukraine, the war there has exposed Russia for what they are - a near-peer paper tiger whose only hold to relevance internationally rests w/the few thousand nukes they possess. Take those away and they're at best a regional power.

That said, everything they're doing has a purpose and that purpose is to test our defenses, our resolve. They're not stupid; they still remember one of their jets getting shot down over Turkey back in 2015 and they don't want a repeat.

Putin turned down the proposed peace deal with Ukraine. Russians are now on the verge of a petroleum crisis. Many protested to oust Putin.
