Port of Long Beach Fully Automates Final Terminal, Capping Decade-Long Project
Port of Long Beach celebrated the full automation of its last remaining manual terminal,Pier T, on December 26th. The conversion, part of the "Port of the Future" initiative, is complete despite years of union opposition. Officials promise increased efficiency and competitiveness but acknowledge a net reduction of approximately 800 equipment operator jobs over the past ten years. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 13 has vowed to fight for jurisdiction over the new tech jobs created and enhanced safety protocols around the autonomous machinery.
