African States (ECOWAS) has elected Julius Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, as its chairman. He succeeds President Bola Tinubu, who served as the bloc's chair for the previous two years.
During the 67th ordinary session of the authority, which was convened in Abuja on Sunday, Tinubu was succeeded by the president of Sierra Leone.
President Tinubu was re-elected in Abuja one year after being elected to the office in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023.
His chairmanship was challenged with the burden of restoring democracy in the region after Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso pulled out of the bloc following their coups.
