Rental Businesses: How do you ensure that customers don't damage things they rent?

It is a common scenario that you would rent out one thing or the other to a person in good condition. And the person returns it damaged or vandalised. How do you ensure that anything you rent out to somebody is kept safe and not returned to you damaged?

If I am renting out a clothe for instance, I take photos of the condition of the clothe in the presence of the rental client. And I compare it when it is brought back. Anything amiss? The client has to pay because I would inform them earlier.

The best thing is for the person that is renting the stuff to drop a down payment that is security deposit. That gets refunded back to him of he returns the rented item in good condition.

I have come across some where you have to submit an original copy of your identity cards like national identity card, or international passport, then there are some who tell you to pay a specific amount of money, once you have returned what you rented in good condition, the money would be given back to you.

That's the extreme. I think some kind of deposit in terms of money is better than having to risk the original documents.

Yea, i think one where people drop their original documents is usually common with renting cars though.

Cars are expensive. It is okay for one to drop their documents preferably ID Card that is valuable for security. But that would not hold for renting plates.

Yes it's reasonable for cars, lol no one would even agree to drop their ids for renting plates and smaller things. In this situation, it is usually extra money they drop. The Last time i was sent to rent graduation gowns, i had to pay extra that was given to me back after i returned the gown.

It is simple you need to start with getting advance payment from them. Tell them they would pay for whatever the damage and that's it
