Residents evacuated by truck, makeshift rafts after monsoon rains batter the Philippines

Torrential rains from an enhanced monsoon triggered flooding across parts of the Philippines on Tuesday, July 22, forcing a second day of school closures, flight cancellations, and the suspension of government work. In the town of Cainta in Rizal Province, east of Manila, residents had to wade through waist and chest-deep floodwater after overnight rain. The local government deployed trucks to help ferry the stranded residents, while others came up with ingenious ways themselves to travel on the flooded roads. A woman was seen sitting on a plastic chair on top of a makeshift raft while being pulled by some men wading in knee-deep floodwaters.

According to the national disaster agency, thousands of families remained in evacuation centres as relentless rains, intensified by Tropical Storm Wipha, which swept through the country's north last week, continued to batter the country. Forecasters detected two new low-pressure areas, threatening to bring more rain to already soaked regions.
