According to the report, US President Donald Trump has confirmed plans to resume nuclear testing for the first time in over three decades, saying Washington must “do it if others do.” The announcement followed Moscow’s reported tests of nuclear-powered weapons and rising tensions over deterrence.

Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth called the move a “responsible” step to maintain US strength. Ukraine, meanwhile, claimed the decision was prompted by Russia’s recent combat use of the 9M729 cruise missile, a weapon once banned under the INF Treaty. The Kremlin has neither confirmed nor denied those allegations, as concerns mount over a potential new era of nuclear brinkmanship.

The news that the United States plans to resume nuclear testing is deeply concerning. History has taught us that the use of nuclear weapons brings catastrophic consequences and that an arms race only increases the risk of global conflict. To say that it must be done because others are doing it strikes me as a dangerous justification, because it shouldn't really be a competition of who has the most destructive power. Diplomacy and dialogue must always be the priority, not the threat of using weapons of mass destruction. Furthermore, the fact that Russia is conducting tests and that tensions are rising only increases the danger of an escalation that could spiral out of control. I believe that right now, the international community should focus on reducing nuclear weapons and seeking peaceful solutions, instead of promoting an arms race that only brings destruction and suffering.
