The Supreme Court of Russia has officially banned the International Satanic Movement, declaring it a “terrorist organization.” The decision went into effect immediately and was submitted to the Ministry of Justice for registration.
The move was based on a request from the Prosecutor General and the Ministry of Justice, who argued that the movement posed a threat to the state. The Russian parliament had also proposed considering Satanism a terrorist movement.
The Russian Orthodox Church, led by Patriarch Kirill, supported the ban and thanked the Supreme Court for continuing efforts to ban occult propaganda and unofficial spiritual services.
Religious experts say Satanists in Russia often organize in small groups of fewer than ten people or even conduct private activities. Roman Silantiev, an expert on religious affairs, said there are tens of thousands of followers in the country, although there is no large organized organization.
According to Silantiev, this ban is also motivated by the movement's pro-Ukrainian stance. This is why in 2024 the Russian Prosecutor General's Office declared the "Satan Temple" an undesirable group in the country.
