Sanae Takaichi, 64, has been voted as the new leader of Japan's ruling conservative party, making her the country's first female prime minister. One of the more conservative contenders who leans to the right of the ruling party is Takaichi. She is a well-known and controversial character in Japanese politics, having served as a government minister, a TV host, and a heavy metal drummer. She has a lot of obstacles to overcome, such as a weak economy and households dealing with persistent inflation and stagnating incomes. Along with navigating a tense US-Japan relationship, she will also need to follow through on a tariff agreement reached with the Trump administration by the previous administration.

That’s a historic moment for Japan. Having Sanae Takaichi as the first female prime minister is definitely a big shift in the country’s political scene, especially considering how conservative Japanese politics has traditionally been. Her background is quite unique too—being not only a long-time government figure but also a former TV host and even a heavy metal drummer makes her stand out compared to other leaders. Of course, the challenges she faces are huge: the economy has been sluggish for years, inflation is putting pressure on households, and incomes haven’t kept up. On top of that, managing relations with the US while honoring agreements made in the past will be tricky. I think her leadership style and policies will determine whether she can truly bring change or if she’ll struggle with the same issues that past administrations faced. It’s going to be interesting to watch how she handles it all.
