Sanae Takaichi, 64, has been voted as the new leader of Japan's ruling conservative party, making her the country's first female prime minister. One of the more conservative contenders who leans to the right of the ruling party is Takaichi. She is a well-known and controversial character in Japanese politics, having served as a government minister, a TV host, and a heavy metal drummer. She has a lot of obstacles to overcome, such as a weak economy and households dealing with persistent inflation and stagnating incomes. Along with navigating a tense US-Japan relationship, she will also need to follow through on a tariff agreement reached with the Trump administration by the previous administration.
