Sanford Medicine scientists have discovered a treatment that could reverse cartilage loss in aging joints and even prevent arthritis after knee injuries. By blocking a protein associated with aging, the treatment restored healthy, shock-absorbing cartilage to aged mice with injured joints, significantly improving joint movement and function.
Even more impressive, cartilage samples from human knee replacement surgeries also began to repair themselves when exposed to the treatment.
The discovery opens a new avenue of hope for cheaper and more effective treatments for patients suffering from joint problems.
