In a remarkable and historic event, a San Diego County library has received a book that had been overdue for nearly 46 years! Cassie Colwin, the library’s branch manager, opened a package in early January and was surprised to find a copy of The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford. The book was due back on May 20, 1980.

Inside the package, there was an unsigned handwritten note that read: “Sorry it’s so late” accompanied by a drawing of a smile .

For now, the San Diego library no longer charges late fees, reflecting their Instagram tagline: “It’s never too late to return your library materials.” Colwin said the book will not be returning to the lending shelves, but will be kept on her personal shelf as a **special and fun keepsake.

It's a small story but one with great weight: it teaches us that clearing old debts, even after decades, still brings smiles and surprises.
