Whether you are into business or not, one should set clear goals in life for what one want's to achieve. One can have shirt term and long term goals. This does help one to stay focused and manage time well to achieve them. One stays focused and thus, more productive. I start my day with a to do list. I might not be able to accomplish all on the list, but my day stays focused and well planned. It turns out productive at the end. Without a to do list, I just feel like a headless chicken

That's right it's not only about business to set clear goals even to our personal lives. Though it may take years to achieve at least we have to try setting clear goals and check the ones accomplished realistically.
Most business do succeed when they set goals and objectives that are very realistic and updated to the current dynamic market trends and staying focused to achieving them.
One thing about setting goals is that even if you don't get to meet up with your goals, you would have pursued it so well that you have made significant progress along the line.

I bet that the the setting of some clearer games really helps in the keeping of the business managers on the right track as far as the business sustainability is concerned for sure.
Goals are needed not only for a focus to stay motivated and move forward to achieve them, but also to keep a track of your progress. We all tend to get off track from time to time. Having a goal makes it easier to evaluate and see that we are making the right moves and going in the right directions. And if we have gone wrong and off track, we can quickly correct it and come back to track, before it is too late.

It is indeed essential to be smart in business not dumb. My neighbor was dumb. She gives credit to her neighbors who are transients. She lost almost 35,000 because those transient people left the place without paying her. She should be a smart business owner to avoid failures.
