Should we invest in crypto coins that is not in top 20?

In crypto, we have the top coins based on trading volume. However, there are crypto assets that won't make the cut in the top 20 assets in the crypto market.

Should one still invest in those kinds of coins? Is investing in such coins just a function of gamble and luck?
