To defame a person could land anyone in prison, especially if the witnesses are of good sense and physically fit to testify in court. We need to mind our own actions. Specific examples of slander that can lead to imprisonment are rare and depend heavily on the jurisdiction and circumstances. Generally, slander is treated as a civil matter, but some places still have criminal penalties.

Here are some instances where slander might lead to jail:
  • False statement that harms another person’s reputation;
  • Defaming a woman’s chastity;
  • Criticizing the president;
  • Spreading false information as a journalist;
  • Extortion;
  • Sedition libel;
  • Intentional libel, and
  • Defamatory libel.
Lastly, all of us need to remember that even where criminal penalties exist, they are infrequently applied due to freedom of speech and protection. In the Philippines, the penalty for defaming a person is one million pesos.

Giving out false statements that can destroy the reputation of the other person is more than enough to take legal actions.
Agree, it is not a joke to face a suit related to defamation or slander. It is stated in the post that criticizing a President in a country is slanderous, but none were jailed though he he.
