I have worked for a software company which offer software on a subscription basis. Customers pay a small subscription fee per month to use the software instead of buying the software. This model works quite well for the business.

With that, the company keeps making recurring revenue instead of what they get from a one time purchaser. Subscription pricing also works for offline businesses that don't require any tangible products.
There are physical businesses that you can negotiate with and be paying them a monthly subscription for patronage of their services.

Yes, it can work. When I was running a restaurant, we had customers on subscription. We sent meal packets to them every day for a monthly price.
