A boy that I know that was an apprentice for a paint production company left the company to open his own paint production business. Half of the customers of the company shifted to patronize the new paint production business of the apprentice. Where did the company get it wrong?

It do happen especially when the business owner becomes very lousy and let the apprentice manage the entire business. By so doing, the customers become acquainted with the apprentice and will likely patronize him tomorrow because they have built trust.
