The existence of the man-made chemical trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is being monitored as it continues to contaminate European waters. TFA concentrations are particularly high in Oise, France, and the Elbe, Germany, to name some. The European Action Network on Pesticides has issued an alert regarding the widespread poisoning of European waters with this synthetic chemical. TFA results from the decomposition of PFAS insecticides and nonstick coatings used in kitchenware. As a result, many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have expressed serious concerns about the existing quality of tap water.
