A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Greece's Santorini Island late Monday, which marked the strongest quake in a series of tremors that have rattled the area. This seismic event led many residents to leave Santorini, and the tremor was felt as far away as Athens. Just two hours later, another quake measuring 5.0 followed. Athens University said, almost 13,000 tremors have been recorded between January 26th and February 8th.

More than 11,000 residents of Santorini, including seasonal workers, having left the said island. This unusual level of seismic activity has puzzled scientists, as the region hasn't seen such events since recording began in 1964. Santorini is situated above a dormant volcano, which last erupted in 1950.
