According to a German rescue organization, three young girls died in a rubber boat transporting migrants in the central Mediterranean after waves as high as 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) repeatedly swept over the boat. The mother and brother of the sisters, three pregnant women, and a seven-month-old infant were among the approximately 65 individuals that were saved, according to RESQSHIP.
After leaving the Libyan city of Zuwara, the "dangerously overcrowded" rubber boat "started taking on increasing amounts of water" a few hours later, according to the organization.
Libya serves as a significant starting point for migrants who attempt to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa by making the dangerous route across the Mediterranean.
