According to the report, a woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for her role in a deadly crash involving an Amish buggy and for attempting to deceive authorities by having her twin sister take the blame. The incident occurred on Sept. 25, 2023, near Spring Valley, when Samantha Peterson, 37, drove under the influence of methamphetamine and crashed into a buggy carrying four people.

The report also stated that the crash resulted in the deaths of two children, a 7-year-old and a 11-year-old. Following the crash, Samantha called her twin sister, Sarah Peterson, to the scene and convinced her to claim responsibility for the accident. However, police quickly identified inconsistencies in their story and determined that Samantha was the driver.

During her sentencing on October 1, 2025 Samantha expressed remorse. She blamed it to her addiction.

I find what happened in that accident very sad and regrettable. The loss of two children in an accident caused by someone under the influence of drugs is something that should never have happened. Samantha's attempt to mislead the authorities and have her sister take the blame shows a serious lack of responsibility and empathy for the victims. However, I also understand that she cited her addiction as a contributing factor, and that reflects a deeper problem that needs attention, such as access to treatment and support for people struggling with drug addiction. Justice in this case appears to have been served appropriately, but I believe we must also reflect on how to prevent these tragedies from happening in the first place, by investing in prevention and rehabilitation for those facing addiction.
