In a move with significant political implications, the Trump administration lifted financial sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Moraes was the lead judge in the trial that convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for attempting to stage a coup. A senior U.S. official stated that maintaining the sanctions was "no longer in the interest of the United States". The decision followed months of U.S. pressure on Brazil's judiciary, which had earlier been accused by the White House of "intimidation and censorship" during Bolsonaro's trial.
