Using Forums for Link Building

Most forums do not allow you to share links within your posts but you can easily share links on your signature, profile and status update. Forums are one of the best places to build links. I have been using forums for link building for a long time. Have you tried forums for link building, did it really help for search engine ranking and traffic?
