No one taught me how to save money. But I have the concept of saving money when I was a young kid because my parents told me to save the lucky money received during Chinese New Year.
There was no lecture set aside for us to teach us the financial discipline, habit of savings and value of money. I grew up in a household where it was a part of living and we absorbed it from the very young age. We were involved in financial decisions according to our age. Like my mom bought a car that was cheap and when we suggested another costly brand, she explained why she can't. She told us about the other financial obligations and priorities that would be impacted. So, a judicious spending organically seeped into us. And so did the saving habit.
When I was little, my parents only taught me discipline and saving habits, not how to save. When I was little, I saved from the remaining pocket money that was not spent, but when we grow up, we have our own way and continue to develop according to our needs.
I wasn't taught how to save money. It was in my thirties that I learned to do it independently. I discovered the value of saving money while the pandemic was happening. It's a good thing I did.
I remember when I was around ten years, my brother and I got one piggy bank pot with a hole. Our mom encouraged us to put our savings from pocket money. We also put our money in it that we got from relatives and others as gift on special occasions (we have a tradition for that). When the piggy bank would get full, we will break it and count the money and give it to mom for depositing in bank. My mom made few fixed deposits like that and that money covered a part of our higher education. This was a great lesson and that every single penny saved counts.
