I know that staff are expected to have defined roles when they are employed in an organization. And that always restricts them to one department.

But some companies swap staff between several departments in the organisation. Of what benefits is this to the growth of the organization?

This usually helps to reduce fatigue. Doing one thing all the time can become boring and annoying which often leads to low drive for production. Swapping them from time to time helps prevent this and at the same time, it helps to prevent the business relying on one person to handle a particular task.

I have found that rotating employees across departments builds wealth of knowledge and increases creativity at work. It helps understand the business inside out and reduces mental laziness. This leads bigger efficiency and faster organizational development.

If the organization is good to their staff, the staff would use those work swaps to help build other departments of the organization that they are not their primary department.
