What do you prefer, ample time of duty or overnight payment?

In most workplaces, the workers are obligated to choose from working for extra time for overtime payment or leave for home earlier with the normal working rate.
So which is which?

If i do not have anything else to do, then I can decide on taking some extra time to get paid extra.

If I have no other plans or are not feeling tired, I will work overtime to earn more.
