What is autofocus on smartphone cameras?

Generally, I am not a pictures person. But I have been seeing auto focus on smartphone cameras. Honestly, I am lost to what is it's functionality is.

What autofocus does is to adjust the lens of the smartphone camera to stay directly on the object to be captured living minimal chance for having a blurry picture.
