What is the significance of Meta Description to the SEO of a site?

I have seen much talk about crafting meta description strategically. And I want to ask how meta description can help a site to have a higher ranking on search engines. Does meta description really have any significance on SEO of a site?

Meta description doesn't really have a significant effect on SEO. One subtle effect that it has is that it allows search engines to know what your page is about and that can help the search engines know where and when to display your page.
