What makes a device "smart"?

I have been hearing about smart devices. And they are getting more popular by the day. We have smartphones, smart televisions, smart watches and the likes.

My question though is, " what makes a device smart"? What are the special attributes that define smart devices?

Any device that can be set to work on automation and can be networked is a smart device. And it must have Internet connection too.

I believe it's the functions and features of the device that makes it smart, and your ability to be able to make money form it.
