What makes a phone to go off during usage?

Smartphone always gets hot when they are being used. What is the reason that phones get hot? Is it a hardware or software related issue? Is there anything that can be done to prevent a phone from getting hot? Or is it normal for a phone to get hot?

I want to believe that you imply that the phone gets hot and goes off. That is certainly an over strain of the hardware. Check for heavy apps and uninstall.

There are different reasons for this, it could be an error in the system software, in some cases where the phone is full it goes off, then there are cases where it could be due to virus.
