What role does chambers of commerce play to the business world?

I have been seeing "Chambers of Commerce". And going by the name, they are supposed to have one role or the other to play in business.

To get it right, what does Chambers of Commerce add to the world of business. As an entrepreneur, do I need to identify with them?
