Why do people spread rumors that a single woman does not have savings?

A single woman professional has had a job for approximately 8-9 years and savings of her own , yet when she spends some time in another city, everyone she interacts with are told that the woman has no savings, she never had a job. What could be the motivation for spreading the fake defamatory rumors about savings?
