Why should a website have a very good "About US" page?

I think the "About Us" page on a website is something rudimentary that every site should have. Some sites are quite casual about their "About US" page. Why do you think a very good "About Us" page is very necessary for a site? Do you place emphasis on it?

Many users would make the decision to browse your site after reading your "About Us" page. It has to be well written.
