Is the website Monetization still worthy of?

I have learned that most webmasters nowadays are running the website maintance costs with their money on their pockets. Monetization on websites hardly helps in paying the running costs for websites. What is your take on that?

What skills do you think one need to monetize a site? Monetizing basically means running ads or selling products on your site. Generating revenue is entirely different thing.
